The commercial fuel business
Syarikat Sri Minyak Tenaga Sdn. Bhd. was established in 1986. It was the success of this company that powered the business to grow until what the Group is replica Rolex today. Initially, Syarikat Sri Minyak Tenaga Sdn Bhd had a humble rental office at Jalan Khoo Peng Loong and the key asset of the business wasour 1st barge, Selco L62, which was essentially a floating station. In 2nd February 1988, we initiated the setting up of a branch in Sarikei, a nearby town to Sibu (2 hour boat-ride) operating under Sri Minyak (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd to boost our fuel & lubes businesses beyond Sibu where we can better serve our Sarikei-based customers and those in the outskirt areas. Our branch was manned by Mr. Dominic, to operating a floating barge T1-6099 and a mini station. Subsequently we added a fuel vessel named Princess Pricilla, which is to transport & deliver our fuel from the depot directly to customers.
Due to business expansion, our company decided to purchase another floating barge christened Puteri Amelia, which was officially launched on 10th October, 1991 & now both Selco L62 and Puteri Amelia are berthed at our own SMT depot at Tanjung Engkilo.
The Retail Station
In line with our business growth with Shell, we started a Shell filling petrol station in 2005. Feeling encouraged, we decided to expand the station. Before our renovation in August 2014, our retail business was limited to 5 islands with 10 pumps for only diesel & Unleaded 95. After the completion of renovation in October 2014, after a lapse of two months, our fuel business and sundry sales are picking up tremendously with the added 4 new islands and 8 pumps with a new product offer – V power 97. We are privileged to be chosen as Sarawak’s second SELECT store and we are also the first station with a Surau (place for Muslims to pray) and to provide services and amenities, we built the best wash-room facilities (comparable to hotel’s) of any service station in Sarawak and we incorporate wash-up and bathing facilities for long-haul truck drivers. We have always borne in mind to practise Shell’s two golden rules:- 1.Excellent housekeeping and 2. Friendly good service at our station to ensure the smooth flow of our friendly service oriented business concept.
The Transportation business
As for transportation, we have foreseen the importance of owning logistics. Due to the improving road system leading to easy accessibility by trucks delivery in Sarawak has been shifting from water-based to land-based. We started with our first 11,000-litre capacity oil tanker in 1999. With the relocation of Sibu Shell Depot to Tg. Manis (river mouth of Rejang River), more & more oil tankers are needed. We now have 13 of 32,000-litre capacity oil tankers to deliver not only our own fuel for the Sibu & Sarikei maket, but also to our customers, PNK Kabong, Belawai, Bintulu, Kuching & Miri.
To enhance our safety and efficiency, we installed GPS systems in our oil tankers and each tanker is tracked and monitored daily.Monthly meetings with drivers are held as well as quarterly safety briefings to ensure and comply with Shell and the local authority’s safety regulation and to update our drivers on a regular basis.
The Lubricant Business
Lubricants has always played a prominent part in our petroleum business. In the initial years it was sold as part of the business under Sri Minyak Tenaga. Later with needed focus and more professionalism, we are proud to say that we worked closely with Shell. The road to market initiative started in 2008. Over the years, we have mostly been exceeding or achieving the yearly sales target set by Shell.
